After trial operation in Linz: The StVO amendment provides for traffic light regulations with and without a green flashing phase

What is meant is a different traffic light control when flashing. The Interior Ministry issued a statement last week warning of confusion due to these “traffic light regulations with and without a green flashing phase,” the “Kleine Zeitung” reported on Friday.

In the report, the Ministry of Transport gave the all-clear against arbitrary blinking throughout Austria, because “traffic lights that do not flash green should be used on access roads to motorways.” A pilot project went into trial operation in Upper Austria in 2014 in Linz, where an “intelligent” traffic light at the Franzenhausweg entrance to the Mühlkreisautobahn (A7) regulates traffic towards the Westautobahn (A1) – the density of the traffic is determined using sensors in the surface.

In any case, the Ministry of Transport reported to the “Kleine Zeitung” that “the so-called flow control system brought ‘good results’”, while Asfinag “said that the attempt was ‘successful in terms of increasing traffic flow’”. Backlogs are to be expected on the access road, but the resulting waiting times will be “compensated for by time saved on the motorway”.
