18 suspected Omikron cases in Upper Austria

The crisis team of the state of Upper Austria reported 524 new infections with the corona virus on Tuesday afternoon, and 2,859 new cases have been reported throughout Austria since Monday. 245 Covid patients currently have to be treated in the hospitals on normal wards, 94 require intensive medical care. In addition, 18 new deaths became known, including a 31-year-old Innviertler with previous illnesses who had been treated at the Schärding Clinic.

The experts are increasingly worried about the increasing number of suspected Omikron cases. 18 are currently known in Upper Austria. They have already been pre-sequenced by laboratories in Upper Austria and it can be assumed that they will also be confirmed by AGES through whole genome sequencing. The AGES results are still pending.

For the apparently much more contagious omicron variant of the corona virus, the Ministry of Health presented significantly stricter rules for contact person tracking last week. For previous Corona variants, a quarantine period of ten days applies, with a free test possible after five days. Vaccinated and convalescent persons can be classified as K2 persons. If you come into contact with an Omikron case, however, regardless of vaccination or recovery, you are considered a K1 person and have to be in quarantine for 14 days, with no chance of premature termination.
