Three dead in a bomb explosion at a Colombian airport

The first person was killed trying to get over the fence at Camilo Daza International Airport and an explosive device exploded in the process, police tweeted. The other two dead are therefore two police officers who later inspected a suitcase that had been left behind when there was also an explosion. Flights have been suspended or postponed. Colombian President Iván Duque rejected the “cowardly terrorist attack” on Twitter.

In recent months and years there have been repeated attacks on the police and public institutions in Colombia, which were attributed to dissidents of the former FARC guerrillas or the still active partisans of the ELN.

The South American country has suffered armed conflict between the armed forces, left-wing guerrilla groups and right-wing paramilitaries for over 50 years. The largest rebel organization FARC, which financed itself with drug trafficking, among other things, signed a peace treaty with the government in 2016.

The security situation in Colombia has improved since then. President Duque’s helicopter was also shot at in Cúcuta in June, after a bomb attack on a military base with more than 30 people injured.

In the border region with Venezuela, the fighting over areas of influence and drug trafficking routes between the various armed groups had recently increased.
