Representatives of senior citizens are calling for a rapid increase in the income limit to support 24-hour care. “The fact that the current guidelines for 24-hour care have remained unchanged since 2007 in times of high inflation is simply unacceptable,” criticized the President of the ÖVP Senior Citizens’ Association Ingrid Korosec yesterday.

Korosec, who now wrote to Social Affairs Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens), referred to the urgency of the situation in view of the loss in the value of the income limit, which, according to Statistics Austria, is now 57.7 percent. The Senior Citizens’ Association reports cases in which, as a result of the recent pension increases, seniors only receive a correspondingly reduced level of support due to the income limit of 2,500 euros being exceeded.

The SPÖ-affiliated pensioners’ association is also pushing for an increase and an annual valorization of the income limit. The president of the pensioners’ association, Peter Kostelka, complains that the annual increases in pension and care allowance mean that more and more people are no longer eligible for full support for 24-hour care. The fact that the income limit has never been adjusted for inflation since it was introduced 17 years ago is “no longer acceptable,” said Kostelka.
