The American carrier strike group, led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, passed the Strait of Gibraltar and entered the Mediterranean Sea. This was announced on December 14 by the US Navy’s Sixth Fleet.
“The strike team arrived in the US Sixth Fleet’s area of responsibility as part of a planned campaign to support naval operations to maintain stability and security at sea and to protect the interests of the United States, its allies and partners in Europe and Africa,” the fleet’s website says.
Now the carrier group is heading to the Persian Gulf region. The group will spend some time in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
The aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman carries about 90 carrier-based aircraft and helicopters, including four squadrons of 48 F / A-18 fighter-bombers.
In addition to the aircraft carrier, the group includes the missile cruiser USS San Jacinto, destroyers USS Bainbridge, USS Cole, USS Gravely, USS Jason Dunham, and the Norwegian frigate Fridtjof. It also includes the Tomahawk nuclear attack submarine with cruise missiles.
Earlier, on December 5, the US missile destroyer Arleigh Burke arrived at the Romanian port of Constanta for “routine operations to ensure naval security and regional stability.”
Prior to that, on November 25, Arleigh Burke entered the Black Sea. The Russian military began tracking the American ship.
On November 13, the press service of the Ukrainian Navy published footage showing the exercises with the participation of ships from Ukraine, Romania, Turkey and the United States. The flagship of the US Sixth Fleet, Mount Whitney, also took part in the maneuvers. In total, seven ships were involved in the training, two of which were from the Ukrainian Navy – the Slavyansk patrol boat and the Yuri Olefirenko landing ship.
