Expert Josef Weichenberger explained on Sunday that it was probably a so-called earth stable that served as a hiding place from gangs of robbers. A 16 meter long corridor system has been preserved.
According to Weichenberger, who also worked at the Upper Austrian State Archives, the discovered secret passage was almost completely submerged under water. For further investigations by the Federal Monuments Office, the water level was lowered using a pump. Three narrow passages were found that branched out, but collapsed after a few meters.
According to Weichenberger, the preserved 16-meter-long corridor system is lined with brick for the first three meters, can be walked on while bending over and has a narrow horizontal passage with a diameter of 42 centimeters as well as 15 lamp niches, a trachea leading upwards and a dry stone wall that ends in front of a fountain. The corridor system should now be preserved and provided with a secure entrance.
