CATFISH. Reducing your carbon footprint with small challenges: That’s the basic idea of the app “Climate Challengers” the JKU. In cooperation with the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten there is now “OÖN climate challenges”: Small tasks, such as only using gentle forms of mobility for a week, are intended to encourage participants to behave sustainably. App users can compete in community or Upper Austria-wide rankings and their own family groups when it comes to CO2 savings.
One of the users is Stefan Glaser: The 40-year-old from Wels is taking part in the climate challenges for the OÖN. He will report on his experiences in the Welser Zeitung at regular intervals. “I want to inspire and motivate others to think about their behavior when it comes to sustainability”Glaser explains his participation in the campaign.
Proven energy saver
With CO2 savings, the Welser can be used as “advanced” apply: Civil engineers and entrepreneurs have been concerned with their energy consumption for a long time. He is renovating his own house in Wels, where he lives with his partner Yvonne and his daughters Ella and Leonie. “I try to take all measures that make ecological and economic sense”says Glaser. He monitors the energy consumption of household appliances with sensors that provide data in real time via WLAN.

Glaser also founded a renewable energy community for Wels and Thalheim (pg.pmpluss.com) with his father Wilhelm. They tested the system for a year and are now looking for more members. “We want to show that it is possible and even exciting to use sustainable energy without any loss of comfort”says Stefan Glaser.
The father of the family has already started with the first climate challenges – he has chosen five, including the OÖN challenge of using the eco mode on the dishwasher for a week. This is also equipped with a sensor on the Welser that measures power consumption. “I will report at the end what the savings are”announces Glaser.
He also tries out some of the challenges that the JKU app regularly offers – for example, not showering for longer than three minutes. “I immediately encouraged my parents and my brother to stop the time”says Glaser. The Glasers’ preliminary conclusion: three minutes in the shower is enough.
Of the “Climate Campaigners”app, the Welser is enthusiastic: “At the beginning you roughly determine your own footprint. Dealing with your own behavior is very exciting – the individual tasks encourage you to do so.” Glaser is excited about the coming week: “I’m on a business trip in Vorarlberg for three days. I’ll try out how well I can carry out the individual tasks along the way.”
