Does Marco Odermatt do it like Hermann Maier once did?

For the third time in a row, the overall ski World Cup winner is Marco Odermatt. Thanks to his giant slalom victory on Saturday in Palisades Tahoe (USA), twelve hundredths of a second ahead of Henrik Kristoffersen (Nor), the Swiss can no longer be caught ten races before the end. The 26-year-old said he was overjoyed, “even if it doesn’t feel like an overall World Cup victory today.”

It seemed inevitable that the Swiss would take home the big crystal ball for the third time, at least since the injuries to the multi-discipline riders Marco Schwarz, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde and Alexis Pinturault. It’s an advantage for Odermatt if his excitement doesn’t fade when he defends the overall World Cup, as he still has a number of records within his reach. He is the first Alpine athlete to win four crystal balls in one winter since Hermann Maier in 2000/01.

In the giant slalom World Cup he is 386 points ahead of Croatian Filip Zubcic with four races remaining, and in the Super-G classification he is 81 points ahead of Vincent Kriechmayr from Gramastett with a race still open.

The closest thing is in the downhill, where only 42 points separate him from his pursuer Cyprien Sarrazin before the final competition. However, the Frenchman suffered a calf injury when he fell in the second downhill training session in Kvitfjell a week ago and therefore had to miss the two speed races in Norway. So there is a question mark behind his fitness level.

Speaking of points – in this regard, Odermatt is still concerned with improving his own World Cup record. He collected 2,042 points last year and currently has 1,702. If the 26-year-old continues to be invincible in giant slalom, he could even surpass this milestone without needing the points from another discipline.

He didn’t want to look too far ahead in Palisades Tahoe. “Everything is fine, I enjoy it, it’s fun. So there are definitely a few more points,” said Odermatt.

Both women’s races canceled

The ski ladies were condemned to do nothing: due to too much fresh snow, both Super-Gs in Val di Fassa in the Dolomites had to be canceled. The speed drivers have already lost six races this season. In the Super-G, only Kvitfjell and Saalbach-Hinterglemm are on the program this winter.
