Tourism in the Salzkammergut is booming again. The number of overnight stays has almost reached pre-Corona levels again – and a historic high could actually be reached this year. The Austrians in particular are loyal visitors. They make up half of all holidaymakers, followed by tourists from Germany and the Czech Republic.
According to Salzkammergut Tourismus-Marketing GmbH (STMG), 5,345,611 overnight stays were recorded in the previous year. This means an increase of nine percent compared to 2022 and the third-best result ever. The Salzkammergut accounts for 62 percent of all overnight stays in Upper Austria.
Will this year be a record year?
The record year of 2019 is now only 2.9 percent away – and there is a good chance of setting a new record this year: The European Capital of Culture with Bad Ischl as its banner city will attract many additional visitors.
In addition, Lake Wolfgangsee is celebrating St. Wolfgang’s 1,100th birthday with the musical “Wolf” on the new lake stage. The European Shooting Festival in late summer will attract around 10,000 shooters from all over Europe, and thousands of participants are also expected at the European Miners’ and Huts’ Day at the end of May.
The Salzkammergut tourism region is the association of eight sub-regions: Ausseerland-Salzkammergut, Attersee-Attergau, Bad Ischl, Fuschlsee, Dachstein Salzkammergut, Mondsee-Irrsee, Traunsee-Almtal and Wolfgangsee. These regions work closely together through the STMG – and see this as a key reason for the positive figures. “We implement innovations and new ideas together,” says STMG Managing Director Michael Spechtenhauser. “This includes, among other things, the introduction of our new, uniform ticketing system, which makes us a pioneer in Austrian tourism.”
However, the structure of tourism is likely to change: The state government is pushing for a merger of the eight sub-regions with the implementation of the new tourism law in 2025, which is certainly triggering criticism in the region. There is heated debate behind the scenes.
