For Union Haidlmair Nußbach it should have been the eleventh national championship title, and for attacker Pia Neuefeind the first gold medal in indoor fistball in Austria as a farewell. Both plans failed in a thrilling final of the women’s Bundesliga due to callous, highly concentrated Mühlviertel women. Union Freistadt won the final against Nußbach 4:3 (11:9, 9:11, 4:11, 11:8, 11:2, 6:11, 11:8).
It was a game at eye level that was offered to the fans in the sold-out Enns town hall by the best women’s teams in Austria. Only in sets three and five was one of the teams able to clearly prevail. Ironically, in the deciding set, in which the majority of fistball fans had expected an advantage for the more experienced Kremstal five, the Freistadt team pulled away early. Led by legionnaire Pia Neuefeind, Nußbach fought its way back to 8:10, but then Freistadt’s Brazilian attacker Cecilia Jaques took her chance and used the match point to make it 11:8 and thus the first state championship title for the Mühlviertler women.
“The final showed what a high level women’s fistball is at,” says coach Marco Salzberger. Freistadt was more hardened in the crucial phases: “We can still be happy about the silver medal.” In the semifinals, his team clearly defeated Arnreit 4-1.
Speaking of new enemies: The German, who for a few months filled the gap in the Nußbach attack caused by the loss of Marlene Hieslmair and Ines Salzberger, is leaving the Kremstal team again. “She will now support European Cup winners TV Dennach,” says setter Jana Lugerbauer.
