In a video excerpt circulating on the Internet you can see how the ex-professional used a megaphone to address his fans during a speech, using a megaphone to lash out at his city rivals (“assholes”). Hofmann said in an official statement: “The words were not intended for the public, but were inappropriate regardless.”

The joy of the derby victory would remain, “as would my regret about the choice of words. That’s why I would like to apologize for that, despite all the rivalry, that was and is not appropriate,” Hofmann continued. He had already apologized to Austria on Monday in the person of (sports director, note) Manuel Ortlechner.

Rapid beat Austria 3-0 on Sunday. It was the first ever derby success in the Allianz Stadium, which opened eight years ago.
