It is not so much the formal observance of the timing of the elections in Libya that is important for Russia as the participation in them of representatives of all the leading political forces of the country. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Tuesday, December 14.
“The date has been set – December 24th. I hope it will be sustained. The priority for us is not the formal observance of a certain deadline, but the substantive provision of the elections in such a way that representatives of all leading political forces can take part in them and the results are recognized by all of them. Frankly and openly, from this point of view, even if there is a slight delay or postponement, I do not see a big problem in this, ”he said on the Egyptian TV channel TeN TV, the transcript of the interview was published on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The main thing, according to Lavrov, is “that all the“ roughness ”that is now manifesting itself in preparation for the elections, were eliminated.
“I mean the inclusiveness of the participants in this process and the list of candidates. There were attempts by the electoral bodies of Libya to prevent someone from participating in the elections, then these decisions were revised. I hope that everyone will be admitted, ”the minister emphasized.
He also noted that Moscow strongly advises the United States and Europe not to interfere in the Libyan elections.
“I cannot speak for the Libyan people. The United States, all the more, does not have the right to do this: it participated in the destruction of the Libyan state in 2011. As the then President Barack Obama said, the United States tried to lead “from behind.” “Forward” was released by countries such as France. She, as it turns out, at that time had personal scores with Muammar Gaddafi. I would not take the liberty and strongly advise the Americans and Europeans to try again to decide the fate of another people, especially the Libyan one. Let the Libyans decide themselves. We will advocate that the Libyans themselves ensure transparency, cleanliness of electoral processes and find the courage to recognize the result of the choice of their people, ”the head of the Russian department said.
In early February 2021, the UN-sponsored Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in Geneva elected a transitional executive branch of Libya, which will lead the country until the general elections scheduled for December 24.
On March 10, the Libyan parliament approved the composition of the government of national unity of Abdel Hamid Dbeiba, for which 132 out of 134 deputies voted.
After the overthrow and assassination in 2011 of the head of state Muammar Gaddafi in Libya, armed conflicts between various groups did not stop. There is a dual power in the country: in the east there is a parliament elected by the people, cooperating with the Libyan National Army of Marshal Khalifa Haftar, and in the west, in the capital Tripoli, there is the Government of National Accord of Fayez Sarraj, formed with the support of the UN and the European Union.
