For many years, the female fistball players from the Union Compact Freistadt were always somewhat overshadowed by the successful men’s team from the brewing city. That changed with the indoor Bundesliga season that ended at the weekend. This time it was the women who were able to lift the championship plate in the end. The reward for many years of persistent development work.

Two-hour exchange of blows

During the close game in the final against Nußbach, the Freistadt team showed several times that they are not only extremely strong on the ball, but also in their heads. After a 1-2 set deficit, they initially managed to equalize and immediately followed up to take the lead 3-2. But then the Compact ladies failed to close the bag. With the score at 3:3, a seventh set had to decide the 2023/24 championship title. It was finally the Brazilian national team player Cecilia Jaques – the 23-year-old from Porto Alegre has been playing in Freistadt’s uniform since November – who used the match point to make it 11:8 and, after an almost two-hour marathon match, gave Freistadt the first state championship title in the club’s history.

“We have trained hard for years and are very proud that we were able to fulfill our dream of winning the state championship today,” said Freistadt captain Laura Priemetzhofer after the award ceremony in the sold-out Enns sports hall. To get a feel for the hall, the team completed an extra training session in Enns on the Tuesday before the final tournament.

The Freistadt men took the 1:4 final defeat against the favorites from Vöcklabruck sportingly. Captain Jean Andrioli: “The semi-final against Urfahr was still in our bones in the final. Vöcklabruck were far superior to us today. Everyone in the hall saw that. We are happy that we were able to use our young squad players and are happy about silver .”

Bronze went to Arnreit

For the women’s team from Union Raiffeisen Dialog Telekom Arnreit, the final tournament ended in the semi-finals with a 1:4 defeat against the defending champions Union Nussbach. Nevertheless, the Mühlviertel women’s pride in winning the bronze medal outshone their disappointment in missing out on reaching the final. “We presented ourselves strongly throughout the entire indoor season, were able to offer the audience an exciting game today and brought home bronze. It definitely makes us want to set our goals a little higher in the field season too,” said setter Magdalena Bauer.
