In a paper presented on Monday, the Federal Chamber of Civil Engineers appeals to politicians and business to make sensible use of built-up areas and to limit further land consumption. “Austria is overbuilt,” said Chamber President Daniel Fügenschuh. Instead of building new ones, incentives for renovation should be created. The lobby group includes architects and civil engineers.
Among other things, vacancy monitoring is required in order to create a basis for avoiding vacancies. Climate-neutral and resource-saving design and construction methods should be promoted in order to cushion additional costs arising from higher requirements. The chamber demands that innovative forms of housing should not fall back on the socially disadvantaged population.
The civil engineers have little to gain from the proposal to receive 100,000 euros in the form of a “home ownership bonus” for the construction of a single-family home. “Relying on new buildings and thus on sealing in order to stimulate the construction industry would be like doctors calling for another pandemic in order to be able to treat more patients,” Fügenschuh is quoted as saying in the broadcast.
