Lebenshilfe, Volkshilfe, the Association for Contemporary History, the Braunauer Tafel, the Catholic and Protestant Churches, the Weltladen, the Greens, the SPÖ, the ÖVP and others are calling for a joint rally for humanity and democracy in Braunau. Under the motto “Never again is now” A colorful program will be offered on Saturday, March 16th, 3 p.m.: The journalist and publicist Hans-Henning Scharsach (“Strache in the brown swamp”) will give a speech, Robert Eiter from the network against racism and right-wing extremism will also appear. The bands Nude Ranch and Fink Ployd provide the music for the rally. There is literature from the poetry slammers Lirow Paulsen and Jamsina Amasha.
This widely supported rally was organized by Braunau Green City Councilor Günter Winterstätter. “It should be a peaceful and, above all, a non-partisan festival that is supported by all kinds of organizations: political factions, denominations, clubs, cultural workers, companies”, he says. The man from Braunau is pleased that he managed to find so many supporters. “The first time I called around, I received a sensational response from all sides. There were 45 people at the first networking meeting, including from neighboring Bavaria”, he says. All other parties – including those across the border – were invited and most of them promised support.
Speaking of neighbors: Rallies for democracy and against right-wing extremism have been taking place in Germany for weeks. The people of Simbach invited people to attend at the weekend. “They set the bar pretty high”says Winterstätter, who was also there himself. The police speak of 800 to 1,000 participants.
The idea for the rally in the largest district capital of the Innviertel came to the Braunau entrepreneur on the return journey from the rally with around 250,000 people in Munich. “I thought to myself, we need to organize something like that in Braunau. We are burdened with the terrible history of National Socialism and nationalism. A rally like this is more fitting in Braunau than anywhere else”, Winterstätter is convinced. A signal should finally be set: “The overwhelming majority want a liberal democracy and an open and tolerant society”he says.
