Armenia and Azerbaijan confirmed the agreement on restarting the railway. This was announced by the Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Wednesday, December 15.
“During a trilateral meeting with President of the European Council Charles Michel and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, we confirmed the agreement with the President of Azerbaijan to restart the railway,” Pashinyan wrote on his Facebook page.
According to him, the railway will operate “in accordance with internationally recognized border and customs rules on the principles of reciprocity, under the sovereignty and jurisdiction of the countries.”
“Armenia will get access by rail to the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Russian Federation. We also agreed to continue contacts, ”the Prime Minister said.
On November 26, Russian President Vladimir Putin presented an olive branch as a gift to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The Russian leader recalled that she symbolizes peace.
The meeting of the three leaders took place on Friday, November 26, in Sochi. It lasted about three hours and was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the signing of the ceasefire statement in Nagorno-Karabakh on November 9, 2020. During the trilateral talks, the parties discussed the situation in the zone of the Karabakh conflict and the ways of its settlement, as well as assessed what was done over the past year to stabilize it.
In November 2020, Armenia and Azerbaijan, with the participation of Russia, signed an agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. The document also provides for the introduction of Russian peacekeepers into the region, the exchange of prisoners between the parties to the conflict, the transfer of a number of regions of the region by Armenia to Azerbaijan and the return of refugees to Karabakh.
