Good medical care and psychological support are important factors. Self-help groups also help people find their way back to a good life. Anna Hochgerner has been the contact point for such cases at the Ordensklinikum Linz for five years: “20 groups whose illnesses are treated by us meet in our building. We make the offer visible, and our doctors are often speakers there too.”

Volunteering

Those affected and their relatives volunteer. Talking openly at eye level without pity or shame is good for the people there – you no longer have the feeling of being alone. The members would also benefit from the so-called “swarm knowledge”. “The people there are often real experts in their field,” says Hochgerner. Patients’ needs could also be better articulated and enforced with a group in the background.
