As State Infrastructure Councilor for Upper Austria, he is responsible for a 6,000 kilometer long road network, said Günther Steinkellner on Wednesday at a press conference at which the most important construction and renovation projects for 2024 were presented.
The federal government has long since transferred the federal highways to the states, but still reserves the right to collect the “control revenue,” criticizes the Upper Austrian State Transport Council. This amounts to 35 to 40 million euros per year in our state alone. “This corresponds to our fixed amount to maintain the Upper Austrian road network.”
Steinkellner demands that, as part of the financial equalization, these amounts should be earmarked for the maintenance of the state’s road network.
Annual frost damage
Continuous damage occurs to the road network every year, for example due to the change from frost to thaw.
The state of Upper Austria has budgeted 54 million euros for the construction of new roads this year, which also includes, for example, the state’s contribution to the construction of the Westring. An additional 30 million euros are available for the Weyer bypass, the Haid bypass and the new Danube bridge that has just been approved by the first instance.
