186 four-year-olds are celebrating their “first” birthday today

For a total of 4,835 women and men who were born on a leap day in Austria, the registered day of their birth is back on the calendar this year.

Every four years is a leap year in which the calendar counts 366 days. In 2024, February will not only have 28 days, but will also have an additional 29th day in order to align the calendar and the seasons again. This prevents the beginning of spring from being in January in a few hundred years. In Austria, this affects a total of 4,835 “leap year children” who were born on February 29th – including 186 children who, for the first time after waiting four years, do not have to choose another day for their birthday.

897 people in Upper Austria are celebrating their birthdays today. Only in Lower Austria are there more “leap year children” with 1024 anniversaries.
