As part of the plan to improve connectivity, the Salto airport was inaugurated last week and began receiving regional flights.

With a total of four airports renovated would end Uruguay this year 2024, among them, Leap – recently inaugurated -, Paysandú, Melo and Peach, a program that from the first year included the airports of Carmel and Rivera that have already been inaugurated.

The manager of Infrastructure and Maintenance of Airports Uruguay, Jorge Navarro, explained how the schedule established in the initial contract and the investment program is progressing. Thus, the official clarified to Informativo Uruguay that this was “an ambitious project, since it included an airport the first year, that of Carmel; the second year, Rivera and Leap; and this year in August the works will be completed in Mello, in October in Paysandu and in December in Peach”.

In that sense, Navarro explained that the next one to be inaugurated will be airport of Mello, which is dated for the month of August. “The works are remodeling since there is a very solid construction. It is similar to the work at the Rivera airport and does not include as much new work as at Salto. If works will be carried out in the platform, strip leveling clue, perimeter fence, among others.”

For its part, it is expected that the airport Paysandu It can be inaugurated from the month of October while the Durazno one is expected to be in the month of December.

The keys to Salto airport

Last Friday the international airport of Leap, where the commissioning took place, which was attended by President Luis Lacalle Pou.

The largest works corresponded to the renovation of the clues of landing, of which the main one is 1,600 meters long and the secondary one is about 750 meters long. In addition, the passenger terminal was remodeled.

“It is an important remodeling in the terminal passengers, which is now 780 square meters. The old terminal was remodeled for offices. A re-coating was also done clue, platform, runway and platform LED lighting system, new control tower, the terminal includes space for a free shop,” Navarro explained.

On the other hand, the official highlighted the construction of a new detachment of Firefighters, which are mandatory by international regulations. “There are 7 fighters 24 hours a day, a new fire truck that works with foam and water and rescue tools and suits were purchased,” said Navarro.

Furthermore, among the new technology that will be incorporated is the placement of a LED system. The same type of lighting will be used on the platform and the terminal.
