Mongolia plans talks between South Korea and DPRK in 2022

Mongolia plans to hold talks in 2022 between South Korea and the DPRK at the Ulaanbaatar Dialogue platform. Russia is also invited to participate. Mongolian Foreign Minister Batmunkhiin Battsetseg stated this in an interview with Izvestia on the eve of the country’s president’s visit to Moscow.

“Our country strove to provide support in the peaceful settlement of the conflict on the Korean Peninsula and in opening up new opportunities for resolving issues through this mechanism. This initiative is in line with Mongolia’s foreign policy concept and assists in promoting dialogue at the regional level and, in this regard, I support the work of this mechanism. We plan to hold the next conference next year and hope that Russia and other countries of the region will take an active part in it, ”the minister said.

The idea of creating a mechanism for the Ulan Bator Dialogue on security issues in Northeast Asia by analogy with the Helsinki agreements in March 2013 was put forward by the then President of Mongolia Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj.

The countries of the region supported the initiative, and since 2014, within the framework of this mechanism, international conferences have been held on an ongoing basis. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mongolia was unable to hold the Ulan Bator Dialogue in 2020 and 2021, the minister explained.
