It was particularly surprising that people of middle and working age between 35 and 55 years of age experienced an acute infection with an average of 13 multi-organ symptoms at home, according to a broadcast.
The infection often involved complaints in the heart, lungs and abdomen. Among other things, the number of acute symptoms finally emerged as risk factors for delayed recovery, with men having a 35 to 55 percent lower risk of long covid, reported study director Judith Löffler-Ragg from the University Clinic for Internal Medicine II. Other international studies would also show that the majority of Long Covid affects women, although they have a lower risk of a severe acute course and a lower hospitalization rate.
More than 3000 participants in study
The study, the results of which were reported in the journal “Clinical Infectious Diseases”, is based on an online survey carried out between September 2020 and July 2021. So far, a total of 2,065 Tyroleans and 1,075 South Tyroleans have taken part in the online survey sponsored by the State of Tyrol. In the current analysis, however, only the information from those interviewees who did not have to be treated in hospital and who still had symptoms 28 days or longer after the infection was included, it was emphasized. “Almost half of the participants stated that the symptoms persisted beyond 28 days,” said Löffler-Ragg, who pointed out in this context a possible distortion by study participants with increased psychological stress.
