“Incredibly cold-hearted”: 4 guinea pigs abandoned on a meadow

The animal rights activists from Pfotenhilfe Lochen in the Innviertel reported an “incredibly cold-hearted act” on Thursday: four female guinea pigs were simply left in a box in the middle of a meadow near Fürstenbrunn in the Salzburg municipality of Grödig. The rodents were lucky in misfortune: an animal lover discovered the box, took courage and took the fluffy foundlings to the Pfotenhilfe animal shelter in Lochen am See (Braunau am Inn district).

“Ruthlessly exposed”

“Recently a man from Salzburg showed up at the door with a box full of guinea pigs. The animals were apparently abandoned unscrupulously,” says Pfotenhilfe boss Johanna Stadler. She and her employees now look after the quartet. The condition of the fur indicates that the guinea pigs were kept indoors and would therefore have hardly survived due to a lack of food and the current night temperatures. “In addition to the current nighttime temperatures around zero degrees, the current intensive spreading of manure and liquid manure would have been life-threatening for the four victims,” says Stadler.

Animal rights activists are asking for information

Now we are looking for clues about the perpetrator. Abandoning animals is punishable by up to two years in prison if they are unable to survive in the wild. “It would also be important to know how the animals were kept, whether there are any other abandoned animals and whether they are possibly pregnant,” Stadler asks for information using the contact form on www.pfotenhilfe.at.
