It is one of the focus areas of the city center concept, which should be completed by autumn 2024: the main square. As reported, there will be a separate competition for its design; the city center concept should provide the specifications for this.
Where there is potential for improvement was discussed at a workshop at the end of February, including representatives from retail, gastronomy, the taxi industry and the “We Altstadt” association.
More on the subject: No design competition for Linz’s main square before autumn
With the opening of the Westring Bridge (planned for November 2024), the main square will, as announced, be freed from through traffic. The innovations on the Nibelungen Bridge, which are also associated with the opening of the West Ring Bridge – here a lane will be made available for cyclists – make considerations regarding cycle paths necessary.
However, the competition will not start until autumn; the start of the redesign of the main square, which is planned to last several years, is scheduled to take place in 2025. Planning City Councilor Dietmar Prammer (SP) is considering temporary use during the transition period – such as the Christmas tree labyrinth in January this year.

The competition specifications have not yet been finalized. The screws that need to be turned in order to increase the quality of stay are more seating, more greenery and shading options, says Prammer – there is a need for action, especially on the main square side of the Old Town Hall. In contrast to the part of the main square with the Trinity Column, there is no clear functional assignment here. Considerations are also being made for the bridgehead; a kind of balcony with seating could be created here.
The main square is a treasure that needs to be looked after, says project team leader Rene Ziegler from Modul5 GmbH. We are currently examining where trees can be planted – one option would be the corner towards Domgasse. The options are limited due to underground parking and bunkers. He also addresses the creation of areas for temporary use and development and recommends reducing the number of taxi parking spaces in order to gain additional design space.

Traffic officer Martin Hajart (VP) welcomes the ideas offensive and makes another suggestion using a chessboard. He emphasizes that discussions with the police and the state regarding traffic calming are already well advanced and is pushing for speed in implementation. “We have to act quickly now so that we can start as soon as possible when the Westring Bridge is opened to traffic,” says Hajart.
Green club chairman Helge Langer emphasizes that the potential of the main square can only be increased if it finally becomes car-free. “The fact that considerations about how the square can be designed in the future is now gaining more and more momentum is of course positive. But I expect that through traffic will be a thing of the past in the future and that the promises to make the main square permanently car-free this year will actually be implemented the act must be implemented,” says Langer.
