The United States is consulting with allies and partners in Europe on a security dialogue format with Russia. This was announced by the press secretary of the White House Jen Psaki on Tuesday, December 14.
“We are continuing close consultations with our European allies and partners to determine the best format for the security talks agreed upon by US and Russian Presidents Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin,” she said at a regular press briefing, which is available on Bely home in Twitter.
The press secretary also recalled the contacts of the head of the State Department Anthony Blinken with her colleagues on the sidelines of the meeting of the foreign ministers of the G7 countries in Liverpool last weekend.
“US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried has just been in Kiev to meet with Ukrainian leaders and reaffirm US commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to discuss the way forward. Today she is in Moscow to meet with Russian leaders to express our concerns about the Russian build-up of forces around Ukraine, as well as to discuss directly with high-ranking Russian officials, to underline our commitment to help resolve the conflict in Ukraine, ”added Psaki.
Regarding the talks between Moscow, Brussels, Washington and Kiev, the White House spokeswoman noted: “This is a good sign that diplomatic contacts and discussions are continuing, including with Russian leaders and officials, Ukrainian and our European partners.”
On December 10, Jen Psaki said that the United States could not yet say for sure what the format of negotiations on the security issues posed by Russia in Europe would be. At the same time, she recalled that the formats of negotiations on European security with Russia have existed for about 70 years.
On the same day, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that the Kremlin plans to convey to the leadership of the United States and NATO its conceptual vision of the issue of security in Europe, the authorities are preparing a corresponding document.
Earlier, a senior US administration official said the United States would hold talks with Russia and allies in the European Union on security issues in the region in the coming days. It was noted that one of the topics discussed will be the resolution of the crisis around Ukraine.
