Real salary grew by 3.4% year-on-year and is above pre-pandemic levels

The private sector drove the variation upward in the last 12 months, which remains above inflation.

He real salary grew 3.4% year-on-year during the last 12 months, thanks to the boost of the private sector, as highlighted in the latest report from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which reveals the data for January, at the beginning of a year where a recovery in purchasing power is expected and which is 2.1% above the same month in 2020, in the pre-pandemic.

He Average Salary Index (IMS) saw an improvement of 4.56% last month and 8.71% in the last rolling year, outperforming the inflation, which was 1.53% in January and 5.09% in the last 12 months. Meanwhile, the variation of the Average Nominal Wage Index (IMSN) was 4.12% last month and reached 8.11% in the moving year.

He private sector was fundamental in this upward variation, with an increase of 9.57% in the last 12 months, with a real improvement of 4.26%, while in January the increase was 3.93% (2.36% real).

Meanwhile, in the public administration The increase was 7.23%, with a real improvement of 2.03%. However, when analyzing last month, the increase of 5.70% meant a real increase of 4.10%.

Regarding the branches of the private sector, Transport, storage and communications was the one that had the greatest increase, reaching 11.28% in the last 12 months. Completing the podium were the Financial Intermediation, with 10.44%; and Teaching, with 10.19%.

Further back they appeared Real estate activities, business and rental, with an improvement in the moving year of 10.05%; Construction (9.97%); Manufacturing industries (9.76%); Hotels and restaurants (9.20%); Trade (9.14%); and Social Services and Health (7.93%).

On the other hand, in the public sector, the greatest variation in the moving year occurred in the Central government, reaching an improvement of 7.50%, compared to the increase of 7.38% in the Public enterprises and 5.95% in the Departmental governments.
