She speaks 13 languages and sings in 14. But it’s not just the simple words that singer Jessie Ann de Angelo masters, she knows what they convey. The well-traveled person knows the culture, people and traditions of the countries she sings about – and she passes this knowledge on to those who come to her concerts with humor and feeling.
The native Mexican has lived in Linz for more than 35 years. She came for love, but that’s not the only reason she stayed: “This is my home, you can just feel good here. Everything isn’t always good, but I fundamentally refuse to let the bad things get the better of me in life.” She studied law in Mexico, and today the doctor of law has devoted herself entirely to guitar and singing.
Despite the local distance, Jessie Ann de Angelo has always remained aware of her roots. She teaches Spanish to those interested and not only teaches how to pronounce words and string them together grammatically correctly, but also how to live them. She herself is also a perpetual learner: she is currently taking lessons again and is expanding her language repertoire with Hebrew.
Strength, talent and diversity
De Angelo will bring her musical diversity to the stage at the OÖN Women’s Day on March 8th in the Promenade Galleries in Linz. The program under the motto “We live as women” is hand-picked and specifically tailored to this year’s discussion topics. “It will be a celebration of women, with songs that celebrate our strength and talent.”
For example, she selected pieces by chansonnière Edith Piaf, the Greek singer Melina Mercouri or Spanish songs from “Cleopatra” – by strong artists who have made themselves a brand with their talent and uniqueness. And especially those that “celebrate the influence of women,” says the musician with the extraordinary talent for languages. “With their songs, they carry cultural heritage, courage, joy and determination into the world.”
