March begins with the departure of several political leaders from all parties who step aside from their positions to dedicate themselves to election campaigneither as candidates for the presidency of Uruguay or as support to other figures within their respective spaces: Yamandu Orsi He said goodbye to his “beloved Canary Islands” to seek the candidacy of the Broad Front; Julio María Sanguinetti abandoned the presidency of Colorado Party to begin “a process of internal renewal”; and Javier Garcia renunciation of Ministry of Defence to return to his bench in the Senate and contribute, from there, to the candidacy of Alvaro Delgado in it National Party. Aldo Lema, Tabare Viera and Carolina Cosse These are other names that will leave management to have a role in the campaign.
The election year brought with it many movements and announcements from many others in the ministerial leadership, but also in other political positions throughout the country, such as, for example, mayors and state companies. In that sense, and with the beginning of March—a little less than three months before the internal elections take place—several resignations became effective or will do so in the coming days.
Orsi gets fully involved in the campaign given the growth of Cosse
One of them is that of the mayor of Cannelloni, Yamandú Orsi, that he had announced with the presentation of his resignation two weeks ago that this would be the last day of the mandate for which he was elected to govern the commune until 2025. The change of command ceremony began at 10 and, with it, the farewell officer with 19 years of management in the department.
The “strong” campaign of the one who still emerges as the main pre-candidate of the Wide Front —although Cosse has grown a lot in recent weeks and could give a “surprise” in June—, will begin on Sunday the 3rd, with a first act in the Lafone Square of Montevideo, the place “where it all began”, in reference to the political career of Tabaré Vázquez.

Yamandú Orsi said goodbye with a letter from the Mayor of Canelones prior to his resignation to dedicate himself to the race for the Uruguayan presidency.
Carolina Cosse, For its part, it had planned to launch its campaign on Saturday the 2nd but, due to the rain forecast, it was postponed to Monday the 4th. The event will take place in Spanish Villa, neighborhood “where the pre-candidate grew up,” and in front of the Antel Arena after the Economic Crimes Prosecutor’s Office will file the case for the construction of the stadium and against the mayor of Montevideo.
The communal leader, unlike her main competitor in the internal Broad Front, will not resign from her position, but will take leave to face the campaign also from next Monday until July 8, as approved by the Departmental Board of Montevideo. The interim mayor will be Mauricio Zunino.
The renewal process begins in the Colorado Party
Another political leader who leaves his current role in the context of the electoral campaign is the former president Julio María Sanguinettiwho resigned from the leadership of the Colorado Party in a scenario in which eight pre-candidates will compete for representation of the traditional political space in the internal elections.
This multiplicity of names was one of the reasons that led Sanguinetti to admit the need for a “renewal process” and the resignation of his position in the General Secretary of the National Executive Committee.
“For us it is the closing of a period that we feel is very fruitful in our political life. As important as the hours of triumph were, because the return of the traditional forces to the government,” wrote the Batllista leader in some farewell paragraphs that were published in the Friday Mail.
The former president said that he trusts that the reason why he must “put an end to this stage” is understood. “Very generously, very distinguished compatriots have already expressed their opinion that we should continue, but, personally, I wish it to be that way. Now comes, in addition, the internal campaign and the party and national replacement. Of course, we will continue to be, in the Executive Committee and in the daily work of the Party, with the same spirit as always, but relieved of that very honorable representation,” he stated.
In the letter, Sanguinetti clarified that “naturally” he will militate with the sector Batllistas, whose candidate is the still Minister of Tourism, Tabaré Viera; who will leave the portfolio on March 11.

Former Uruguayan president Julio María Sanguinetti left the leadership of the Colorado Party and will support the pre-candidacy of Tabaré Viera.
Likewise, the historic leader maintained that he is optimistic about the elections: “We would like to think that the Party would significantly increase its wealth, or – in the most pessimistic version – that we would reproduce the previous one, with four senators who have given the government stability and commitment. With that presence, the republican coalition will most likely prevail over a Frente Amplio today dominated by the classist thinking of the Pit-Cnt and the outdated radicalisms of socialism and communism, installed in the anachronistic vision of the 60s,” he noted.
“All elections are important, but this one will be very important. Or the country enters the digital modernity of time, or we will stay on the station platform watching the railway of history pass by,” Sanguinetti concluded.
The nationalist ministers who leave their positions in favor of Delgado
Today was also the turn to begin saying goodbye for the Minister of National Defense, Javier García, whose departure date was set for Monday the 4th, after the president Luis Lacalle Pou give the traditional speech before the general Assembly on March 2.
Through a letter published on social networks, García particularly said goodbye to the Armed forces, both senior and junior staff. “In a few hours I will stop being Minister of National Defense to return to the Senate of the Republic. For this reason, I want to express to you the honor that it has represented for me to be a member of the higher command of the Nation’s Armed Forces and to have been your minister,” he expressed at the beginning of the text.
The current minister, who will leave his position to join the campaign of former Secretary of the Presidency Álvaro Delgado, added that he feels “as an Oriental the pride that the country counts on you,” and also highlighted the “personal affection”: “To the Most of you shook hands personally or shared moments, whether in your units, on the border or in each Peace Mission rotation. That closeness that we knew how to have represents, in some way, everything we did together in these years.”
“Thank you very much for your institutional loyalty and permanent service to the Homeland,” García concluded.
Another white minister who will leave his position next Monday is Social Development, Martín Lema, who will also work fully on Delgado’s campaign for the white election that has the economist like other candidates Laura Raffo and the senator Jorge Gandini —while there is still speculation about the participation of the senator Juan Sartori.
Lema, meanwhile, sounds like a possible candidate for the Mayor of Montevideo in 2025.
