In good time before the start of the holiday, the people of Linz have access to an important oasis of relaxation and one of the most popular excursion destinations. The employees used the lockdown period intensively for maintenance and renovation measures, says City Councilor Eva Schobesberger.
In the area of the ornamental facilities at the horseshoe pond near the entrance, the paths were renewed and parts of the perennial planting were replaced. In the popular tropical house, pruning and care measures were carried out on the exotic plants. In addition, gardeners were busy cleaning and portioning the plant seeds collected in the summer. The different types of seeds are listed in a catalog that will be sent worldwide in the coming weeks. The most diverse gardens on all continents can then order plant seeds from the state capital Linz.
The Botanical Garden on the Gugl is open every day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the exception of December 24th, 25th and 31st and January 1st.
Fewer visitors due to Corona
The review of the year that is coming to an end is of course one that was determined by the corona situation. “With the garden being closed twice at the beginning of the year and now in November and December, we have lagged behind the usual number of visitors for the second year in a row,” says Friedrich Schwarz, head of the Botanical Garden. Numerous events had to be canceled, although one can still be satisfied, as the spring, summer and autumn months went well with regard to the visit.
If it can now be opened for a few more days, Schwarz is hoping that the number of visitors will improve a little. “It would be nice if we could manage 65,000 to 70,000 visitors for the year,” said Schwarz when asked by OÖN. In normal years, the Botanical Garden always attracted between 90,000 and 100,000 visitors.
Although a lot is not fixed in these times, one thing is guaranteed for the next year: the Botanical Garden is celebrating its birthday. At the beginning of May next year, it will be exactly 70 years since the popular facility opened. There will be a big festival on May 14, 2022. More details will be presented as well as the annual program at the beginning of 2022. Incidentally, it will be Schwarz’s last year as head of the garden, because in just under a year he will retire.
