Two cars with migrants from Russia trying to pass through the San Isidro border checkpoint on the Mexican-US border were detained by US border officials. This was announced on Wednesday, December 15, by the Border report portal.
Around 21:30 local time on Sunday (9:30 Moscow time Monday), a border guard noticed a Ford SUV and a Mercedes sedan moving at high speed and intending to cross the border of Mexico and the United States.
The officer was supposed to inspect the cars before they arrived at the checkpoint. However, the cars did not stop, which forced the border guard to open fire. As a result of the shooting, Mercedes crashed into an SUV and both vehicles braked.
The cars were 18 immigrants from Russia without documents. There were even babies among them, and the adults were between 21 and 53 years old. The third car finally stopped in the primary search area. The Dodge Durango housed five adults between the ages of 20 and 34, a five-year-old child and a 17-year-old teenager.
The drivers have been arrested and charged with “bringing in and harboring” people who are not US citizens.
The incident is being investigated by the San Diego Police Department and the Office of Professional Responsibility.
Russian diplomats are in contact with the US authorities, information about the detention of Russians is being verified, said Russian Consul General in Houston Alexander Zakharov.
