In the fourth quarter, it will be possible to start a test drilling in the municipality of St. Georgen im Attergau.

The West Mining Authority in the Ministry of Finance had already approved an exploration drilling near St. Georgen in autumn 2023, and the decision from the nature conservation department of the state of Upper Austria was also available, ADX Energy confirmed to the APA. All “agreements with the relevant property owners have also been finalized, so that all requirements for the ‘Lichtenberg’ well have already been met,” the company confirmed in a report on profil.at. ADX Energy had already announced on December 4, 2023 in a Mandatory notification to the stock exchange informed about this.

Second option

Drilling could begin in the fourth quarter, but there is also a second option: the “Irrsdorf” drilling site in the municipality of Straßwalchen in Salzburg’s Flachgau. However, the permits are not as advanced here as in St. Georgen. A final decision for one of the two positions has not yet been made, it said.

The suspected gas reserves at the “Lichtenberg” drilling point are in any case significantly smaller than in Molln. The Austrian-Australian company accepts 24 billion cubic meters of natural gas there, and around half a billion at St. Georgen.

“Limit drilling time”

St. Georgen’s VP Mayor Friedrich Mayr-Melnhof has a differentiated view of possible test drilling in his community: “Fossil energy is certainly not the model of the future, but it is still needed at the moment. So if it is still necessary, then we have to do what is necessary “Keep evil as low as possible,” he says in response to OÖN’s query and refers to the currently imported liquid gas, which alone consumes 25 percent of the energy for liquefaction. However, he would like to see drilling for a limited period of time and is in favor of investing any profits in research, universities and renewable energies.

Drilling would take place at the foot of the Lichtenberg on a meadow property. It is also not the first drilling in this region, emphasizes the mayor in the OÖN interview. There have already been a few, “most people probably walk past it every day and don’t even know it,” he says.
