The 35-year-old, who narrowly missed his eighth world title last weekend in Abu Dhabi, was knighted by heir to the throne Prince Charles on Wednesday at Windsor Castle. Hamilton beamed after the festive act to which he was accompanied by his mother. A year ago Buckingham Palace announced that the Mercedes driver would be knighted. Due to the corona pandemic, the ceremony could not take place earlier.
In 2008, Hamilton had already received the British Order of Knights from Queen Elizabeth II after his first World Cup victory. The highest honor for British athletes, however, is the accolade. Hamilton is the fourth racing driver to receive this honor after Jackie Stewart, Stirling Moss and Jack Brabham.
He continues to share the record of seven World Cup titles with Michael Schumacher after the Dutchman Max Verstappen dethroned him last Sunday in a dramatic season finale on the last meters.
