Pending approval of the Ministry of Environment, Google presented an environmental report detailing what it would do with the cooling system that generated controversy last year due to its high demand for water.
The controversy with Google came up last year when Uruguay was going through its worst drought in 100 years. At that time, the amount of water the American company would use for the cooling towers necessary for the infrastructure was questioned.
Originally, the company had presented a proposal where the cooling towers would operate with an open circuit with replacement of water from OSE. This generated controversy last year, marked by a context of crisis in access to drinking water and a devastating drought for the productive sector.
What does Google propose?
In February, the company presented a project that aims to reduce the original capacity of the data center and proposes another technology in the cooling system.
In this way, 32 refrigerators would be used, or also called chillers, which will be cooled by air through a closed water circuit. In this way, the water used would be recirculated through a UTE substation.
On the other hand, the report establishes that the operation of the data center will generate several types of waste, including noise emissions and wastewater. To achieve this, the report establishes how each type of waste would be treated.
The second data center in South America
Uruguay It will be the second country in this region of the world to have a data center from one of the most important technology companies in the world.
For this, Google intends to build in the park located in Ciudad de la Costa, in Cannelloni, a data center building and facilities. Previously, the company had to request environmental authorization from the corresponding portfolio, a request that is still being analyzed by the Ministry of Environment.
