Since January 7th, the Knabl family’s house in Eberschwang has been busier than ever before. There is cheeping, barking, wagging, smacking, cuddling and playing like there is no tomorrow. The reason for this is extremely pleasing for the passionate dog breeders: their nine-year-old golden retriever dog Roxy gave birth to a whopping 14 perfectly healthy puppies at the beginning of the year. This means that there are currently 17 dogs in the Knabl household with their three adult Goldies.
“Keeping these rascals under control and looking after the puppies is wonderful, but also a huge task”, admits retired optician Karin Knabl. Since Roxy’s offspring was born, she and her husband Klaus have suffered from a constant lack of sleep because the little ones need around-the-clock care. Luckily, her son Kai always comes home and actively supports her.
“There is so much to do. Apart from the fact that everything always has to be kept clean, we also have to make sure that each of the puppies is well looked after and gets enough food, but also that the mother is not overwhelmed, because 14 puppies are extremely tiring for her too”says Knabl. In addition, Roxy’s puppies would have to learn to cope with their environment so that they can grow into balanced, fear-free dogs. “They need to get to know everyday processes early on, such as what a vacuum cleaner sounds and looks like or what it sounds like when an umbrella is opened”, explains the Innviertel resident. First trips by car are also important. “Of course, with so many puppies we can only do this in stages, because we can’t get the little ones into the car all at once.” With 14 puppies everything takes longer.
But the effort is worth it, as you can clearly see from the puppies, who are now eight weeks old. “They are all very healthy, well grown and happy”says the experienced breeder proudly. This means that the Knabls can hand over their protégés to their future owners.
The dog lover chose each and every one of them with the utmost care: “For me this is always associated with a lot of emotion because it is extremely important to me that our puppies get good places with loving people.” Before Knabl decides where her little goldies will go, she invites all interested parties who have made it to the shortlist to visit her house. On the one hand, so that they get to know the puppies, but on the other hand, so that the breeders can get an idea of them in a personal conversation.
A birthday photo every year
“In this way, we once again found great owners for our puppies”, Karin Knabl is convinced. She is excited to see how Roxy’s offspring will develop. It goes without saying that she will stay in contact with the new dog owners: “Firstly, I am there to help and advise them day and night, and secondly, they have to promise me that they will send me a photo for every birthday of my Goldies.”
