Belgium sentences Kuwaiti diplomat to two years in prison for slavery

The events took place between August 2017, the date the victim arrived in Belgium, initially with a three-month tourist visa, and May 2018, when he managed to flee the couple’s home, according to the newspaper La Libre Belgique. The young Ethiopian woman reported the events to Pag-Asa, a Belgian association specialized in supporting victims of human trafficking, which accompanied her and acted as a civil party in the trial.

According to the investigation, the woman, who was already working for the couple while they were still residing in Kuwait, was deceived when she accompanied them during their move to Belgium. She thought that she would help them while they moved and that she would quickly return to Kuwait, but in the end she was kidnapped. He could only eat the leftovers of the couple and their three children, and was given no clothing or medical care.

In the ruling, the Brussels correctional court found that she had been “treated like a slave.” According to Sarah De Hovre, director of Pag-Asa, these cases rarely go to court. “The victims, generally women, are very afraid and do not know the language of the country of residence or their rights,” he said.
