Three sex workers killed: “Knives wielded by magic and sorcery”

The accused’s lawyer, Philipp Springer from the Vienna law firm Lessiak & Partner, told the APA on Monday. However, the results of the man’s first psychiatric examination were not yet available.

The lawyer now entrusted with defending the Afghan asylum seeker has not yet met his client in person. During a first attempt last Friday, the 27-year-old refused to leave his cell, he said in an interview with APA. The man had previously made a “fundamental confession” to the investigators and refused legal representation. He was therefore supposed to be given a procedural assistant, but the Viennese lawyer has now taken over the mandate.

“Lives in a delusional world where there is magic”

The accused was also examined psychiatrically for the first time on Friday, said Springer. The public prosecutor’s office immediately began obtaining a corresponding report in order to clarify any possible insanity or other reasons for excluding guilt.

The lawyer described the accused as a “sick person who lives in a delusional world in which there is magic.” He confirmed that the 27-year-old also made statements during his police interview that he had read the Koran and was in a mosque before the devastating knife attack on the three Asian women, as the media has already reported. However, Springer sees these “Muslim motives” put forward by the man more as “elements of his delusional world” because, in his opinion, his client is not particularly religious. He also believes in “witches”. “He is convinced that the knife was wielded by magic and sorcery,” Springer said.

On February 23rd, a Friday evening, the 27-year-old caused a bloodbath with a knife in the establishment on Engerthstrasse, which three Chinese citizens working there did not survive. A fourth woman was able to save herself by locking herself in a room in the Asia Studio. She witnessed the violent crime and suffered a severe shock. The suspect was arrested in the bushes opposite the red light bar, to which a trail of blood led, with the murder weapon still in his hand.
