“We have to remove the entire, already dilapidated roof of the indoor swimming pool and also renew the facade,” said Matthias Winkler from the construction department at the Steyr municipality, responsible construction manager for the renovation of the Steyr indoor swimming pool, which was built in the 1960s, today, Monday, at the starting signal for the city’s 3.7 million euro infrastructure project. “A new building is not necessary, however, as the concrete skeleton is still in good condition.”
After completion – this is planned for autumn after the end of the outdoor swimming season, then the indoor pool will also go back into operation as planned – solar modules on the roof of the indoor pool will heat the outdoor pools, and PV modules on the facade and roof will also provide part of the required energy provide.
Contribution to climate protection
The significant weak points on the facade are already visible to the naked eye. In the winter months, icicles form and the facade cladding shows signs of fatigue. Condensation damage occurs again and again and large parts of the heating energy are lost. In window constructions, glass panes become blind.
For the time being, bathing operations can continue undisturbed. However, from April – a month earlier than usual – the indoor swimming pool will be closed: construction work will start immediately after Easter, on Tuesday, April 2nd. However, according to those responsible in the city of Steyr, April is the month with the fewest bathers in the year. Work on the outer shell of the pool will be completed during the summer months. The sauna remains open during this time. In August, like every year, the sauna goes into summer break for repair work.
The renovation of the outdoor pool is also an important contribution to climate protection, said city councilor Katrin Auer, chairwoman of the supervisory board of the Steyr municipal company: “A renovation is more sustainable than a new building. In addition, ecological aspects are taken into account during the renovation.” Among other things, the windows will be designed with triple insulating glazing, PV modules will be installed in the facade and there will be greenery on the facade.
