The good news first: No one was injured in the tram accident in Urfahr this afternoon, Linz AG informed OÖN in response to a query. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. in the area of Sonnensteinstrasse and Ferihumerstrasse. Two trams on lines one and two were involved in the accident. One of the trains “jumped” off the tracks and there was no further progress.
The Linz Linien overhead line team, including special equipment, went out to “re-rail” the track; a replacement rail service was briefly set up between Rudolfstrasse and Ferihumerstrasse, and there were backlogs on the other trams.
The background to the accident is a switch that did not engage as it should have. For this reason, the tram that left Sonnensteinstrasse hit the oncoming Bim so badly that it derailed. The route is now open again.
