As Shamil Borchashvili announced on Wednesday, he will not be defending his title at the Grand Prix in the Linz Tips Arena this weekend.

I feel very drained and need a few more days of rest,” said the 28-year-old, referring to his second place a week ago at the Grand Slam in Tashkent.

“Shamil had to go to the Golden Score (extra time; note) four times in five fights in Tashkent, achieving a total net fight time of 21:59 minutes. Added to this was the arduous return journey,” explained ÖJV sports director Markus Moser. To date, the Olympic bronze medalist has not recovered adequately, which is why it makes more sense, Moser continued, to take it easy.

“The decision was very difficult for me, I would have loved to defend my title from last year. Instead of fighting myself and risking injury, I will keep my fingers crossed for the Judo Austria team,” said Borchashvili. “For Wachid, I hope that the GP victory up to 81 kg stays in the family.”
