The Departmental Mayor of Rocha proposed the creation of two new municipalities through a letter sent to its Departmental Board, within the framework of the law on Decentralization and Citizen Participation, which determines the procedure for the installation of municipalities in localities with less than 2,000 inhabitants.

Protected by this law 19,272 of 2014, the Mayor Alejo Umpiérrez promotes the creation of Municipality of Cebollatías well as Municipality of La Coronilla-Punta del Diabloin a search to “advance the process of administrative decentralization” and promote “the effective participation of local residents in matters of immediate interest,” according to the letter.

The mayor’s initiative understands that in this way, the inhabitants of these localities will be able to “manage the corresponding resources” to be able to “improve the quality of life in their localities.”

Likewise, it is highlighted that, except for the four municipalities already created (Castles, Chuy, Dove and Lascano), these are the two electoral constituencies in the department with the highest number of qualified voters: 2,177 in Potrero Grande and Punta del Diablo, and 1,509 in Cebollatí.

“In the case of Cebollatí it is the town located furthest from the capital of the department (Rocha city), so it is understood necessary to provide it with a certain administrative deconcentration,” the document continues.

As for La Coronilla and Punta del Diablo, they were defined as “urbanizations consolidated as spas and with similar problems that merit a common approach”, in addition to one being very close to the other.

The electoral districts will be the limits of the new municipalities

The limits of the Municipality of Cebollatí would be included in the EFD series electoral district, while its administrative headquarters will be established in the current offices of the Local Board.

For its part, the La Coronilla-Punta del Diablo Municipality will include the EFC and EFI electoral constituencies and its administrative headquarters will be the offices of the La Coronilla Local Board. At the same time, the Punta del Diablo Local Board will remain in operation.
