The reason is KV disputes between employees and employers. There are strikes in Vienna, Graz, Innsbruck and Klagenfurt, reported the vida union. Accordingly, the cyclists from the food delivery services Lieferando and Foodora do their work from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

After four rounds of negotiations, according to the union, the employers’ offer was still the same “only 5.8 percent. That doesn’t even cover the rolling inflation of 8.7 percent demanded by the vida union”. The employees therefore overwhelmingly voted in favor of this industrial action in votes and meetings.
“The required increase of 8.7 percent would drive the employer’s pure personnel costs alone to an impressive 19 euros per hour”Lieferando argued against it. “Customers would not be willing to pay the necessary price premiums; no one can afford it.”
“No choice left”
“They left us no choice. Employers have not moved an inch towards full inflation compensation”, Toni Pravdic, KV negotiator of the vida union, argued for the warning strike. They want to continue negotiating. “This is about wage increases for employees in a low-paying industry. The employers do not want to grant them any inflation compensation if they have an income of 1,730 euros gross per month for a 40-hour week. We demand more appreciation for the riders’ work and of course this must be clearly reflected in the account”said Pravdic.

“The negotiations mentioned refer to the group of real employees”said Foodora. But there are also many freelancers who would consciously make this decision. They brought input into the negotiations, but were not an actual negotiating partner. “For the benefit of everyone involved, we would like to see a quick compromise that is acceptable to both sides, which we will of course also support.” Freelance employees have health, accident, pension and unemployment insurance and earn an average of 13.20 euros per hour.
“It’s about a life with dignity and without debt”
“Performance in any weather and high physical exertion should be worthwhile and should not lead to poverty and desperate situations”said Fabian Warzilek, chairman of the works council at Lieferando and member of the vida KV negotiation team. After two years of extreme inflation, how are you supposed to be able to pay your current bills for energy, housing and food if you don’t get reimbursed for the inflation?”asked he. “This is not about raising luxury salaries, but about living a life of dignity and without debt.” If employers fail to show insight, a continuation and expansion of industrial action cannot be ruled out.

The delivery companies – subsidiaries of large international corporations – are also demanding “First, fair competitive conditions through comparable employment models for comparable work with comparable providers”as Lieferando put it. “Otherwise, unilateral increases will lead to even more freelance workers in precarious circumstances, also to the detriment of social systems and taxpayers.”
