On Tuesday night there was a fire in an apartment building in Liezen around 1 a.m. – starting from the ground floor, which also houses a commercial business. Around 100 police, rescue and fire services were deployed as a result – there were no injuries. In the early hours of the morning, the Styrian State Criminal Police Office and the Liezen District Police Command carried out the first investigations at the scene of the fire together with an expert in determining the cause of the fire. The suspicion of arson was confirmed.
Suspected arsonists arrested
The criminal investigation led to the former owner of the business and his successor. The Leoben public prosecutor’s office ordered the arrest of the two Syrians (18, 39) living in the Vöcklabruck district. They were arrested at home the same day.
Cross-state collaboration
Police officers from the Liezen and Vöcklabruck districts carried out a house search on orders from the Leoben public prosecutor. A fire detection dog requested from Linz performed valuable investigative work here. Both those arrested are suspected of arson. The amount of damage to the affected property is enormous and cannot yet be quantified. Both suspects are in the Leoben prison. So far they have not provided any information about the matter.
