Uruguay will carry out a survey of victimization and violence through the INE

The director of National Institute of Statistics (INE), Diego Aboalannounced this Thursday the realization of a survey of victimization and violence that would be carried out every two years, it would begin at the end of this year and end at the beginning of 2025.

The agreement was signed between INE and the Ministry of the Interior this Thursday morning from the vicinity of the Executive Towerwhich establishes what resources will be provided to the institute with the objective of financing the survey that will be carried out every two years in Uruguayan homes.

“It will be complementary data to avoid underreporting, especially in ‘less important’ crimes. It will give a much broader picture of violence and crime in Uruguay”, Aboal explained on the television program Arriba la Gente.

In that sense, he explained that the objective of carrying out the survey between the end of this current year and the beginning of next year. It will consist of questions in different homes and will seek to investigate people regarding the crime and violence they suffer.

“In addition, the surveys of victimization investigate other phenomena. For example, how people’s behavior is altered when faced with crime phenomena, such as not going out at night,” Aboal added in the interview.

Reactions within the Ministry of the Interior

Through their social networks, different personalities within the government react to the signing of the agreement. One of them was the Minister of the Interior, Nicolas Martinelli, who highlighted the fact as an advance in statistics. “He Ministry of Interior advances in criminal statistics and violence evaluation. We signed an agreement with the INE to evaluate and improve our information systems, taking a big step towards transparency and security,” he noted.
