Wool exports improved 7% year-on-year

He wool sector has been receiving good news since January of this year with an increase in its exports, I couldn’t say the same sheep meat which has been declining since the beginning of this year.

According to him Uruguayan Wool Secretariat (SUL), which prepares a monthly report of the exports sheep sector, during January and February Uruguay managed to export a total of 6.7 million kilos of wool equivalent dirty base, which includes dirty, washed and combed wool. This result exceeded the volumes of the previous year by 52%.

Meanwhile, in terms of values, the sector managed to sell a total of 24 million dollars, representing an increase of 7% compared to the same period (January and February) of the previous year.

The main destinations

Uruguay managed to export wool and its byproducts to 31 different destinations during these first two months. Among the most important is China with 47% of the total exported to that country, which represents around 11.2 million dollars. The Asian giant had a 223% increase in its export volume, so its value increased by 142%.

In second place is Italy with 13% of the total exported, around 3.2 million dollars. This is followed by Germany also with 13% but for 3 million dollars.

Bad news for sheep meat

Unlike wool and its by-products, sheep meat It exported a total of 13.8 million dollars, which meant a decrease of 11% compared to January and February of last year.

In terms of volume it also suffered a decline. During these first two months, a total of 3.3 tons of sheep meat were exported, which represented a decrease of 14% compared to the same period in 2023.

Brazil It remained the main destination with an amount of 5 million dollars, a volume of 38% of the total exported. Compared to last year, exports to that country increased by 72%. However, the one with the bad news was China which represented 29% of the exported volume for a total of 4 million dollars. If compared to last year, transactions with the Asian giant decreased by 45%.
