Feminism that is removed from reality is not the concern of “Fraustadt Freistadt”. That wouldn’t suit the protagonists either: They are Mühlviertler women who have both feet in life – and that’s precisely why they convey their concerns authentically. Even on issues that are unpleasant for local politics, such as the assignment of street names.
Since its founding four years ago, the action group has never tired of making women’s concerns public in a creative and sympathetic way. “We often hear why this is even necessary, everything would be fine anyway,” says Hedi Hofstadler, spokeswoman for the initiative. “But the reality is different. We are still a long way from equality, equal opportunities for women and men, equal pay, equal visibility and pension security.”
Concept for another three years
Because this equality is not yet within reach, the action group has decided to continue to raise the voice for women with key issues over the next three years. This year, the topic of “women and poverty” will be specifically addressed, announces Christine Lasinger: “The fact that women are particularly at risk of poverty compared to men is not a law of nature, but a consequence of years of political inaction.” The pension system is just one of several examples of this.
The facets in which poverty affects women will be the main topic at a “Speakers’ Corner” this afternoon from 4 p.m., which will be held in front of Freistadt’s Böhmertor – once called “Frauentor”. Girls, women and men are invited to share their thoughts on women and poverty in order to draw attention to this important issue.
The Fraustadt pub quiz on March 15th at 8 p.m. in the Local in the cinema, the play “Der Sturmvogel” by Ethel Smyth on March 16th at 8 p.m. in the Salzhof, a reading by Anna Katharina Laggner on March 22nd at 8 p.m. in the cinema and A concert with Monika Holzmann on March 23rd at 8 p.m. in the MÜK, as well as weekly women’s films throughout March round off the women’s month of March in Freistadt.
The action group has planned further activities beyond International Women’s Day. On June 29th, a “Frauengasse Forum” will be held – also at the Böhmertor/Frauentor – with keynote speeches and a happy atmosphere between women and men. In the longer term, the team is fine-tuning a concept for a women’s research center. There are also plans to build a “co-working space” specifically for women in Freistadt.
Inquiries from other cities
The action group’s activities are now well known beyond the city limits. “We have already had a number of inquiries from women from cities who would like to follow in our footsteps,” says Hedi Hofstadler. The Freistadt women naturally want to take this concern into account and make a contribution to strengthening the lives of women in a larger environment. Hofstadler: “We want to hand over the baton every autumn with the aim of making at least one more city in Austria a Fraustadt every year.”
