Lisa Makas: Gender differences in football are still extreme

Austria’s women’s boss once again pointed out structural problems in Austria

Lisa Makas, the sports director at Wiener Austria in the women’s area, pointed this out on Friday. “We are in a time where, unfortunately, God still needs to be made aware that there is an imbalance for women in terms of pay and the opportunity to get a job in sport,” Makas said on International Women’s Day.

It would start with the fact that during a job interview, “the woman walks out the door with an offer with a lower salary than the man,” said the 31-year-old former team player, who called for equal opportunities for girls and women. If someone has the same qualifications, “then we can’t talk about the fact that just because she’s a woman or because she could get pregnant, she gets less.”

“Structural deficit in sport”

At the same time, Makas admitted that there is also a structural deficit in sport in this country. The fact that Austria, which starts the winter break on Sunday with the Cup quarter-finals at Sturm Graz, has so few female coaches is also due to the fact that there are too few female coaches. “We are in competitive sport and we want to work more professionally, you need the know-how for that. And we are definitely lagging behind in Austria with the trainers.”

The fact that there are so few spectators in the women’s Bundesliga is also an “Austrian” problem. “We have to make sure that we make the sport more attractive by going to stadiums where men also play and not to some secondary field, because the image to the outside world will then be more attractive,” said the Lower Austrian. The development of club brands is important. “In England and Italy the top clubs have a women’s section that play in the top division and they now fill large stadiums.”
