It was only on Monday that Senate 1 of the Bundesliga banned five Rapid players after the derby incidents. Four days later, the protest committee met and dealt with the objection – and Rapid achieved a goal: goalkeeper Niklas Hedl’s three-game ban remains in effect, but is now being reviewed in its entirety.
The first instance had imposed an unconditional ban for one more game. Since substitute goalkeeper Paul Gartler only recently returned to training after an injury, number three Bernhard Unger should have stepped in. Hedl is now eligible to play on Sunday when it comes to qualifying for the championship group in Klagenfurt. The protest committee found additional mitigating factors: his young age compared to the other players. “In addition, he was more on the sidelines and was the least actively involved of all the players,” was the Bundesliga statement.
The suspensions of Guido Burgstaller (six games, three of them conditional), Thorsten Schick (five games, three of which are conditional) and Maximilian Hofmann (three games, two of which are conditional) were confirmed, while Marco Grüll’s first instance verdict was increased from six to six Five game suspension reduced, three of which are conditional. “When reducing Marco Grüll’s suspension, the latter’s special role and role model as captain should be mentioned in comparison to Guido Burgstaller,” the Bundesliga said.
