At least 80 people have died from Lassa fever in Nigeria since the beginning of the year. This was announced on December 16, citing a source at the Nigerian Center for Disease Control (NCDC), Xinhua news agency reported.
So, from the beginning of January to December 8, 2021, 80 deaths from Lassa fever were recorded in the Republic of Nigeria. At the same time, in 17 states of the country, including the Federal Capital Territory, a total of 417 cases of infection were detected.
In this regard, the NCCH announced the intensification of the work of the technical group for the fight against fever, as well as special centers for urgent care for those who fell ill. As specified in the center, the largest outbreak of Lassa fever was recorded in Nigeria in 2017-2018.
At the end of April 2019, Rospotrebnadzor reminded Russians who are going to visit Nigeria about the danger of Lassa fever, the outbreak of which was at that moment recorded in this African country. According to the department, from the beginning of August 2018 to April 14, 2019, over 2.2 thousand cases of the disease were registered in 21 Nigerian states, 122 of which resulted in the death of patients.
Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic disease that usually lasts from one to four weeks. In fatal cases, death usually occurs within 14 days after the onset of symptoms.
