Further radicalization is expected of the protests against the corona measures. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) therefore wants to establish a “networked exchange”. He announced this at a video call on Thursday with media representatives, who, among other things, will be offered specific consultations.
“Insults and harassment of journalists” at demonstrations, rallies in front of media houses – all of this gives rise to “ongoing contact” with the media, explained the minister. Franz Ruf, Director General for Public Security, named “prevention offers” such as “behavior training” in the run-up to demos as well as media contacts and contact officers at the demonstrations themselves.
Police officers and health workers are also affected
According to Ruf, journalists belong to an exposed group, as do police officers and members of the health professions. “Intimidation, threats, and sometimes violence” had to be noted. “I can assure you that we will take consistent action in such attacks.” Conversely, the media are urged to report information about threats to the authorities immediately.
“We are seeing more and more attacks and attempts to intimidate media representatives”, reported Omar Haijawi-Pirchner, Director of the New State Security (DSN) and also emphasized: The police are generally available for “prevention tips”, the authorities are available for “awareness-raising and counseling meetings” to disposal. From the point of view of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, he states that there is a “high level” threat from the continued radicalization of the protests.
Increased at least until the introduction of mandatory vaccination
The situation can be expected to “escalate” at least until the general obligation is introduced. In addition, more and more demo participants, especially from Switzerland and Germany, are “seeping in”, which is causing Haijawi-Pirchner “great concern”. His urgent appeal to the media: “If you perceive a threat or feel uncomfortable – do not hesitate to call the emergency number.” If possible, journalists should refrain from displaying their company’s logos during demos and, if possible, seek eye contact with the executive as often as possible. Even before the start of a rally, it is advisable to contact the head of operations. Haijawi-Pirchner also advises caution when handling mail.
Social scientist Nicolaus Stockhammer explained why media and media representatives are targeted. “Journalists are considered complicit in the Corona policy, as part of the system” – after all, the media also operated as the “fourth power” in the state. In addition, there is the accusation that the media spread “fake news” and that journalists who report on demos on site are “exposed”.
