The 69-year-old Austrian and two Germans, each 30 years old, were hit by an avalanche on Saturday morning in the area of the “Wannig” in the municipality of Biberwier (Reutte district) and were swept away on the surface. The Austrian was injured, the Germans were able to stay on the surface and were uninjured, the police said.
Investigations into exactly how the snow slab was triggered were ongoing. It also remained unclear for the time being whether the 69-year-old was buried. The winter sports enthusiasts were on the rise.

There is sometimes a great danger of avalanches in Tyrol
Predicted larger amounts of fresh snow combined with stormy winds will increase the risk of avalanches in parts of Tyrol at higher altitudes above the tree line on Sunday. As of the afternoon, the avalanche warning service issued level 4 of the five-part scale, i.e. great danger, in some areas, as the state announced on Saturday.Innsbruck. This applied to the areas of the Gurgler Group, the central Stubai Alps and the central East Tyrol to the south (Deferegger Alps, Schober Group, Lienz Dolomites). It was said that 40 to 50 centimeters of fresh snow could accumulate there.
At the same time, other parts of Tyrol were already at avalanche danger level 3 from Sunday morning, i.e. a significant risk, the experts warned. Most avalanche accidents usually occur at this warning level. Level 3 is “often underestimated,” State Security Councilor Astrid Mair (ÖVP) appealed for caution.
